40 items in my wardrobe: 10 outfits

I'm on the journey of finding 40 things in my wardrobe to celebrate my 40-year-old birthday, who has played a massive part in creating my style. In the last part of this series, I showed you 10 pairs of shoes (Read here). Today I will show you 10 of my favourite outfits.

I've had a hard time only picking 10 because I've seen a lot of outfits I've been very pleased with throughout the time. Some of these outfits I can't fit into anymore, but they have meant something special to me, and therefore they need a place here.

I am one of those persons who love to have an outfit and use my clothes in the same combinations. I love to have those outfits I always know works and looks good; that's also how I avoid not knowing what to wear. When I'm sewing a piece of clothing, I always know what outfit I'm going to build with this or use it to lift something I already have in my wardrobe. If I have a few things in my closet I don't use, it's because it has a colour that's hard to match or something like that - then I have to sew something that looks good with it. In that way, I'm sure I'm getting wear out of everything in my wardrobe.

I love having these small "ensembles" in my wardrobe. I look at it like I'm decorating a home; finding that perfect vase can help make one corner look "extra," and that can add magic to the entire living room. That's how I'm feeling about an outfit and my wardrobe in general. Now you might be thinking I must have a crazy amount of clothes, and maybe I do, maybe I don't. Right now I don't have a lot of "active clothes", clothes that I'm using -because I have gained some weight over the past few years (you know, corona…). Being weight is the worst part of having an almost 100% homemade wardrobe. It's the feeling you get when you can't fit into a piece of clothing anymore; the feeling is even more prominent when it's clothes you've made compared to clothes you've just bought.

It's been some time since I last counted my wardrobe, but the last time was in fall 2020, and then I had 9 new things, 9 vintage/second-hand things and 52 homemade pieces in my wardrobe.

Like I commit to my shoes, I also do it with the clothes I'm sewing - especially if the clothes have a story behind them. It's often because it has a detail I've used a lot of time on, the fabric has a unique story, or I made the dress for a special event.

Now that I'm writing this, I can hear that I give my clothes a lot of value if I make them myself. But I also think that the clothes we create and the expression we create when wearing them is extremely important - our outfits and our wardrobe is small stories about ourselves. It's the visual story we write about ourselves from start to finish. When I've seen a piece of clothing and created a fabulous outfit, I want to read the story "out loud", which I think I can do when I'm wearing it out in the real world. I think the clothes I sew tell a great deal about me as a person. I'm not the kind of person who hides; I like to be seen and heard, and my clothes also show, but is there one thing my homemade wardrobe is? It's honest - I want to create joy, and I love to have fun. I'm also profound and severe, but in the end, I always want to have fun and make the most out of life as possible. I think all of that can be found in my homemade wardrobe.

Life is full of colours, and I want to surround myself with that. So on days when everything is grey, both the weather and the mind, I want to smash it with all the colours and lift myself, which often helps. That's what helps me, and my clothes are a big help.

Here are 10 outfits that make me really happy. The story about each outfit you’ll get another day or else this post would be way to long!
