Wardrobediary: 10 details
Do you remember my 40th birthday in January? There I showed 40 things from my wardrobe that mean something to me, but never came up with a further explanation. I do so now that I want to take you into my wardrobe over the summer and put a few words on my favourites. Over the next few weeks you will experience; details, other categories, shoes and outfits. So read along all summer!
Pocket on the turquoise jacket
This kind of embroidery is new to me, but I love playing with beads and sequins. It gives a three-dimensional embroidery, and with very little you can get a great effect. Here it decorates a pocket, but I could easily think of making something that was much bigger on another project. This embroidery is also part of one of my favourite outfits, which is this turquoise set.
Neck embroidery on a beige dress
I made this embroidery while watching Downton Abbey for the second time. It is made with metal sequins and long beads and is embroidered in freehand. It's supposed to look like a knot/bow. I am very proud of this embroidery because it was the first time I threw myself into freehand embroidery, which I think was very anxiety-provoking. It is placed on the neck of a cream-colored dress made of wool.
French stitching
This is probably the finish I use the most. In all thinner fabrics, I use it in side seams and shoulder seams. But if something is cut at an angle, then a French stitch will not work as it gets too hard and stiff and destroys the fall of the fabric. But a French stitch gives a very nice inside, and I love that.
Homemade belt
OOooh belts! - I love belts and making belts that fit my clothes. As here, it can be one that completely matches the dress, but it can also be in a different material or with a beautiful buckle you have found at a flea market. Belts are a favourite in my wardrobe!
Bias band
I use bias band a lot, and together with French seams it can give the most beautiful inside of a piece of clothing. I think putting a lot of energy into getting a nice backside is important. It may not be something others see, but it is something you see every time you put on your clothes. And I know from myself that it makes me both proud and happy that I know it is something I have done just for myself. That's what makes clothes these little declarations of love for yourself.
Polished buttonholes
This detail is something I do far too little! But I hate buttonholes - I never think I have met anyone who thinks it's fun to make buttonholes. But polished buttonholes are actually very satisfying to make. But remember to practice before you start because it requires a lot of practice. But when you master it, they become so beautiful. Also think I should get going on those hand-sewn buttonholes again. So I can get rid of them on the sewing machine.
Flower embroidery
I love embroidery, yes, I have said it many times, but I really do. This embroidery is sewn on a jacket on the collar and pockets, and it is made on bold silk that I bought in London on a trip I was on with my husband, which I dragged around in fabric stores. It is embroidered with silk thread, and I used various techniques, including French knots and some other stitches that I do not know what they are called. I find a lot of inspiration on Pinterest and youtube for new techniques. It was a great project; 100% enjoyment - was I told I love to embroider? Especially flowers!
Homemade buttons
Another fun and easy thing to do is give the clothes an extra touch, which is personal and beautiful. Homemade buttons made from an old curtain ring, A little stuffing and here a hand-sewn stitching to give it new life.
Fun lining
Here we return to make a little extra out of it inside the clothes. I like to put fun lining with a pattern or in a surprising colour in my jackets and coats. I also think putting a peephole or a piece of grosgrain ribbon in the seam between the coating and the lining is nice to give detail to the lining. Wow, I'm glad to see this detail in my clothes. For some it might be too much, but for me, it's the famous declaration of love for myself as I've talked about before😊
Ribbons and attachments
I often find beautiful ribbons and lace and I love to incorporate them into the clothes I sew. I found this ribbon 15 years ago, it is so beautifully shiny in the most beautiful colour combination. Here I have put it around in a "fake" button closure and on the sleeves. I think it is such a nice detail and even though the dress has been washed incorrectly and therefore can no longer be used, I save it because I love the detail and it is good to have in the archive for future inspiration.
